“Climbing Out of the Cradle”

February, 2012 is “Black History” Month for World Magazine and I am recommending their article entitled “Climbing out of the Cradle” by Les Sillars because it gives a concise but informative history of current black leader Kay Coles James and the legacy of black Robert Russa Moton (b.1867) and their time-line historical connection with figures such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Thomas Sowell, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Kay James has founded the Richmond, VA-based Gloucester Institute at Holly Knoll, Moton’s former home, and provides an annual year-long Emerging Leaders program for 25 young black college students.  Kay James says to her budding student leaders: “I don’t care if you’re liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, the one thing we don’t do here is stupid.”

World Magazine has done an excellent job on all of their articles this month, as usual.  I recommend you subscribe to their magazine. It is well worth the reasonable investment.
